Something for the Weekend: David Byrne — Big Love: Hymnal ***1/2 IT has been an extraordinary life through music for the man born in Dumbarton 56 years ago who has lived in North America since he was two. He started out as leader of angular New York new wavers Talking Heads, the punk vibe soon giving way to jungle beats, electronica, latino rhythms and classic pop. In fact, there are no boundaries to Byrne’s work. His latest project soundtracks the HBO series Big Love and is his imagining of Mormon hymns with a good smattering of other atmospheric pieces. Nothing lasts much more than two minutes but the overall effect is strangely compelling. |
