New David Byrne & St. Vincent song (via marching band)

By Ray Roa | Consequence of Sound [Link] | 8.12.10

Its no secret that St. Vincents Annie Clark and David Byrne have been paling around lately. She appears on his latest album Here Lies Love and the 58-year-old Talking Head even joined Clark on stage during a January show at New York Citys Lincoln Center. Just two weeks ago, Byrne revealed that he and Clark were working on music to benefit Housing Works the United States largest community based AIDS service organization and now we have the sound to prove it.

Asphalt Orchestra, a 12-piece cutting edge street band, unveiled the composition titled Two Ships during their performance outside Lincoln Hall last Friday, and those who happened to be around for the free show were treated to a pretty interesting sight. The song is a five-minute exploration of a theme that sounds sort of like The Farmer in the Dell wrapped in avant-garde sonic goodness. In fact, it closely resembles some of the best horn parts on Menomenas Friend and Foe. Regardless, its way better than your grandmas marching band music, and the clip is definitely worth watching. To make it even better, Byrne has promised that vocals will eventually be added to the still instrumental track.

According to their website, Asphalt Orchestra seeks to bring ambitious processional music to the mobile masses, and was created a year ago by Bang On A Can a contemporary music organization that aims to expose innovative music as accessibly as possible to new audiences worldwide. The band plays everything from Frank Zappa to Bjrk, and have performed songs written for them by Yoko Ono and Tyondai Braxton (formerly) of Battles.

Check out all of the artiness in this video originally posted by Brooklyn Vegan, and catch the band at their next show on September 12 as a part of the French Institute Alliances Crossing the Line Festival in NYC.
